Lady Antebellum: On This Winter’s Night

5 Dec

On this winters night

It’s no secret that I go gonzo over Christmas, anyone that knows me would tell you as much. A good Christmas album is to the holiday season what AC/DC and Queen are to a Warrior’s match; necessary to set the scene and to get everyone pumped for the main event, and with a veritable smorgasbord of Christmas albums out this year I’m going to be reviewing them each in turn leading up to the day itself starting with the wonderful Lady Antebellum’s On This Winter’s Night.

I confess I requested this album especially because Lady Antebellum are one of my worst guilty pleasures, with their slick country-pop blend the Nashville three piece epitomize the modern marketability of country music. But unlike many of their peers Lady Antebellum have lost none of their ability to stir the soul for having sold out to the masses, a fact which makes their Christmas album a sure fire winner in any house.

From their slowed down All I Want for Christmas, to the titular holiday pine track On This Winter’s Night and  an elegantly sonorous version of Silver Bells Lady Antebellum are polished perfection and a class act throughout. Even the religiously bent The First Noel and Silent Night which I would normally skip, not being so inclined myself, were so brilliantly rendered that they have become firm favourites in the short time I’ve been listening to the album. An absolute winner and a must have for any family this holiday season.
