Rod Stewart: Merry Christmas, Baby

24 Dec

I’ve always had the utmost respect for Rod Stewart. Leopard print pants and embarrassing barnet aside, he has always been an entertainer who has embodied the classic values of giving his fans his very best and achieving authentic warmth and intimacy in his music. Here on Merry Christmas, Baby the 67 year old rocker is no different.

Unlike many of his peers Stewart’s vocals have not deteriorated with age, and his trademark salty voice is unsurprisingly well suited to Christmas classics like Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and White Christmas. Titular track  Merry Christmas, Baby featuring hip hop heavyweight Cee Lo Green was a surprise favourite. The unlikely pair have such an easy way with one another’s vocals that it was impossible not to get caught up in the undeniable urban coolness of the track, no mean feat for the nerdy territory of Christmas songs. Overall Rod manages to shy away from the slick commercial sound of contemporary Christmas albums on Merry Christmas, Baby, opting instead for a sound that is at once pared back and full bodied all the same, such is his talent.

If you fancy a holiday album that is distinctly relaxed and mellow, you simply cannot go past the cool class of Rod Stewart and his retinue of guest stars on Merry Christmas, Baby. It would also make an excellent stocking filler for loved ones with distinguished taste and is my pick of the crop of this year’s Christmas albums; a true Christmas classic in the making.
