Freaks and Geeks (1999-2000)

26 Aug

Skins has oft been described as the most authentic televisual representation of teen life to date, but for those of us who were a little less precocious, a little less hip, and a whole lot dorkier, that title belongs to Paul Feig’s Freaks and Geeks.

Set in the 80s the series followed Sam Weir (John Francis Daley), an undeniable geek, and his sister Lindsay (Linda Cardellini), a would be member of the stoner freak crowd led by Daniel Desario (James Franco). From first crushes, bullies, identity crises, and heart-break; Freaks and Geeks tackled all the angst and exhilaration of high school life with grace and humour. The stellar core cast was rounded out by Seth Rogen, Jason Segal, Busy Philipps, Sam Levine and Martin Starr as the titular freaks and geeks making the show a veritable who’s who of modern entertainment.

Owing to the abilities of its outstanding young actors, the depth of character development, and impeccable writing, Freaks and Geeks gained a cult following, with its many fans successfully lobbying to have the remaining episodes aired after the show was prematurely cancelled in the US. Watch it for the cameos, the nostalgia, the unparalleled sensitivity, and the laughs; just watch it.

Freaks and Geeks is now available on DVD from audiovisual retailers.

Man, I loved this show. Watched it in the States when it first aired, which was a bit of a mission since they kept changing the time slot.
